Is GPU Unlock safe?

GPU Unlock is free, open-source and reversible, but it is experimental, unofficial software that runs code on your GPU before the NVIDIA driver starts. Here is what can go wrong and how to undo it.

What it actually changes

GPU Unlock writes two hidden speed-select registers on the GPU and then resets the card. Nothing is flashed to the card’s BIOS, and the stock NVIDIA driver is not modified. The setting lives only while the card has power, so a full power-off returns it to normal.

Risks to understand

  • It uses a firmware flaw. The unlock relies on a buffer overflow in NVIDIA’s signed boot firmware. NVIDIA could change this in future firmware, and nothing about it is supported.
  • Kernel-level code. It is a kernel module that runs at boot. A bad interaction can leave you without a working display until you boot without the option.
  • Power limits. The power limit strongly affects the gain; the lowest reported figures come from cards capped at 225 W. Watch power and temperatures in long runs.
  • Stability is not proven at scale. The RTX 4090 and 40-series results are from single cards and short runs, and the project says so.
  • Firmware state. If a card’s firmware does not stop, the module keeps its buffers and logs it. Power off fully before trying again; do not force-unload the module.

Safety steps

  1. Keep a normal boot entry without the gpu_unlock options.
  2. Test one boot first and check the kernel log for your card’s unlock message.
  3. Run a workload you know and compare results and temperatures.
  4. Only then make the boot option permanent.

How to undo GPU Unlock

  • Remove gpu_unlock.targets= from the kernel command line, or delete it for one boot in the bootloader editor.
  • Uninstall the package to remove the module and initramfs drop-ins.
  • Power the machine off to return the card to a fresh hardware state.

Safety questions

Can GPU Unlock brick my GPU?

Nothing is flashed to the card: the change is gone after a power-off. But the module runs firmware code on the GPU before the driver, using a firmware flaw, on hardware NVIDIA never meant to run this way. Treat it as experimental and at your own risk.

Is the unlock permanent?

No. The speed selectors reset whenever the card loses power. The module sets them again on every boot and after suspend to RAM. Remove the boot option and the card runs at its normal rate.

Does it change results?

Reports that compared outputs before and after found them bit-identical.

Will it void my warranty?

NVIDIA and card makers do not support it. Running unsupported firmware code may affect warranty claims; check your card maker’s terms.

Is the code safe to build?

The source is public under GPL-2.0-only. The build downloads pinned NVIDIA inputs over HTTPS, verifies their SHA-256 hashes and generates the firmware on your own machine. Read the repository before you run it, as with any kernel module.
